Learning about styrofoam sound insulation is an essential thing. This is especially true for you who want to use this material for soundproofing purposes.

We all know that sound insulation or soundproofing can be done by applying some materials. One of them is Styrofoam and now this product is coming in a unique form, a spray.

You may use that or install the common Styrofoam on your wall. Is it effective enough for sound insulation? You can read the explanation below to answer that question.

About Styrofoam Material and the Types

The concept of styrofoam sound insulation and how it works can be known by understanding its definition first. Styrofoam is a closed-cell polystyrene petroleum-chemical formulation foam.

It is extruded for creating panels. In the market, you may find that this item comes in two different types as follows:

1.     XPS or Extruded Polystyrene Insulation

This XPS variant is usually seen in blue or pink panels. They are in rigid impact resistant insulation which is commonly used in the industry of construction.

Its surface is quite smooth and good for moisture penetration. This one of the styrofoam sound insulation is made by using polystyrene beads. Those are heated, mixed, and then pushed or extruded out.

The aim is to form a continuous stream of foam that hardens when it is exposed to air. That stream will be trimmed and then cut into thermal panels that have a smooth surface.

2.     EPS or Expanded Polystyrene Insulation

Usually, this type has a white color and is used to make some thermal coffee cups, craft suppliers, coolers, and packaging materials. The surface is a bit rough.

Meanwhile, the individual polystyrene beads can be removed and seen. Generally, this variant also has vapor or low moisture permeability. This EPS is created by infusing heat or steam into a mold.

That mold contains small polystyrene beads. Those heated beads then expand and fuse to create the mold shape. This styrofoam sound insulation item is closed cell, but some parts make it potentially permeable.

Consider Density and Mass

When you want to do sound insulation or soundproofing, there are some important ways to consider. The first is about the density and mass of the materials that you want to use.

It is essential if you want them to block sound effectively from passing through some surfaces. That is why; the Styrofoam must be thick and heavy enough to cover any surfaces.

It is also better to find a material that has a good dense structure. Besides this Styrofoam, you may choose other options in the market such as mass-loaded vinyl (MLV), etc.

Porous and Softness Factors

When thinking about styrofoam sound insulation, you must consider the softness and porous factor too. It will make a job to trap the sound is more effective.

Those are the principles that you need to know that a material should be thick, heavy, soft, and porous. Then the rest is up to you since the consideration must be based on your conditions.

Examples are to find Styrofoam that is a bit expensive but has the best quality. Or you can choose the standard styrofoam sound insulation that comes in a standard price as well.
